Jacka House Conservation Project – Stage 2

Having completed the first stage of conservation works to Jacka House in 2018, Stage 2 will see the restoration of the roofing materials using correct conservation and traditional roofing techniques. It will also see the installation of replacement windows and doors using traditional carpentry techniques, and highlighting the correct methods of timber conservation.

Traditional Roofing Techniques

  • Maintenance and care of existing timber shingles
  • Types of corrugated sheeting used in early construction
  • Correct fixing types for application in heritage buildings
  • Early methods of flashing colonial roofs
  • Traditional techniques for timber framing and working with natural materials

Timber Conservation and Traditional Carpentry Techniques

  • Identifying timber conservation issues in heritage listed buildings
  • Identifying heritage timbers used in traditional construct on regional properties
  • Repairing and patching of timber material to prevent replacement
  • Different joint types used in traditional carpentry practice and their applications
  • The importance of timber conservation in the context of the Burra Charter

Traditional Painting and Lime-washing 

  • Identifying correct finishes for different applications
  • Understanding the importance of traditional methods
  • Mixing and working with, and applying Lime-wash
  • The importance of breathability in finishes

Course cost $1500.00 per person – CITB Members $195.00 per person

  • To qualify for a course which is fully subsidised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) you must be eligible for a CITB Passport Number, and currently working in the Construction industry (SA Participants only).

  • A course which is partially subsidised by either an organisation such as a local Council, or by the CITB if you hold CITB Passport Number, will require a co-payment as shown.
